Mumbai’s tally of coronavirus cases surged to 2,78,590 with the addition of 1,144 new cases on Wednesday. The country’s financial capital has witnessed a rise in the single-day infection count for the second consecutive day after dropping to 800 cases on Monday. The city’s death toll due to the virus increased to 10,723 with 17 fresh fatalities.Maharashtra on Wednesday reported 6,159 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the count of infections to 17,95,959. With 65 more people succumbing to the viral infection, the cumulative toll in the state mounted to 46,748. The state is now left with 84,464 active cases.Amid a spurt in COVID-19 cases in the country, the Centre on Wednesday said states and union territories can impose local restrictions like night curfew to check the spread of COVID-19 but made it clear that they will have to consult it before imposing any lockdown outside the containment zones.India’s COVID-19 caseload went past 92 lakh with 44,376 new cases reported on Wednesday, while the number of recoveries surged to 86.42 lakh. The death toll has reached 1,34,699 with 481 new fatalities.
