MUMBAI: A 14-year-old boy who playing cricket on a beach in Bhayander died after being hit by lightning on Wednesday evening. The city and neighbouring Thane and Navi Mumbai received rain showers accompanied with loud thunder and lightning on Wednesday evening.
Eyewitnesses said Supriyan Bhandari was batting at the Patanbunder jetty in Utan, Bhayander (W) around 6 pm. His friends were fielding. When lightning struck, the boy and his bat were pulled up into the air before landing on the ground. He was taken to a private hospital in Mira Road where he was declared dead before admission. A case of accidental death was filed by the police.
For Thursday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) also issued a yellow alert—thunderstorm with lightning for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar. IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 2.8mm rain in the 12 hours ending at 8.30pm on Wednesday, and the Colaba observatory recorded 1mm rain in the same period. Among the suburbs, Shivaji Park, Dadar received 14.4mm rainfall. Heavy showers and loud thunder were also recorded in Thane and Navi Mumbai. Similar conditions are expected in the city on Thursday, as a yellow alert is in place. A green alert—light to very light rain-—has been issued for Friday onward. The rainfall is a result of a low pressure system weather system formed over the Bay of Bengal.
