MUMBAI: Mumbai and its neighbouring areas recorded moderate to heavy overnight rain, until Thursday morning.
Earlier in its forecast, the Met department had issued an Orange alert (thunderstorm accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and very heavy rain likely at isolated places) for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad for Thursday.

A red alert for extremely heavy rain at isolated places has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad for Friday.

The Met department has also sounded a yellow alert (Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning/gusty winds and heavy rain likely at isolated places) for Saturday.
The Colaba observatory has received 115.8 mm rain in the 24hours ending at 8.30am while Santacruz recorded 86.5mm rain in the same period. Colaba and Santacruz had recorded only 0.8mm and 1.7mm rainfall respectively between 8.30 am and 8.30pm on Wednesday
However, the rain picked up thereafter and continued through the night. Loud claps of thunder accompanied by lighting were seen in various parts of the city. Between 8.30pm and 11.30pm Colaba and Santacruz had recorded 89 and 78mm rainfall.
As of 7am on Thursday, radar shows intense clouds off the coast of Mumbai. “Doppler radar image animation indicating clouds covering from Palghar to Ratnagiri on the west coast. Mumbai and around picked up rains from Wednesday evening with moderate widespread rains. Konkan to remain active next 48hrs in view of a low-pressure system over south Madhya Maharashtra,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general western region IMD.
According to IMD’s weather bulletin, radar and satellite observations show strong convective clouds seen near north Konkan and adjoining areas, indicating possibility thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall.
“The low-pressure weather system brought rain to several parts of interior Maharashtra. Heavy to very rainfall with a wind speed of up 30-40kmph can be expected over Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg on Thursday and Friday. The same weather system will bring heavy rain to north Konkan districts of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. The weather system is weakening and will move over the Arabian Sea in the coming days,” said Shubhangi Bhute, director, IMD Mumbai.
