Number of Covid-19 cases rises even as fatalities come down – Mumbai Mirror

Cases may have increased due to antigen testing, but the total mortality has gone down, official says

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Mumbai increased by 678 between August 23 and 30, officials said on Sunday, adding, however, that the weekly mortality rate had come down.

The state-appointed Death Audit Committee analysed 7,629 coronavirus cases, and 183 deaths, recorded by the BMC last week. Dr Avinash Supe, chairman of the committee, who is also executive director, Hinduja Hospital, said the August 17-23 week had seen 6,951 new cases and 260 deaths.

“In the week August 23-30, deaths have come down to 183 from 260; the number of cases has jumped from 6,951 to 7,629. The number of cases may have increased due to antigen testing, but the total mortality has gone down, which is encouraging,” he said.

The top five wards last week in terms of number of cases were: R (Central) in Borivali (West), 779 cases; R (South) in Kandivali (West), 591 cases; K (West) in Andheri-Juhu, 478 cases; P (North) in Malad, 459; and D Ward comprising Malabar Hill, Pedder Road with 404 cases. The D Ward medical officer of health, Dr Pramod Patil, said that the number of tests had increased and on average 500 people were being tested every day in his area.

“People are well aware and money isn’t an issue for them. This ward comprises the elite section who themselves come forward to test,” Dr Patil said.

To break up with social media or not

There have been multiple times when I have been at this point in life – a point where I distance myself from social media, and even technology, to find myself again.

Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner, attributed last week’s rise in cases to aggressive testing. “Every day cases increased by 200 last week, which isn’t a cause for worry because testing has increased,” he said.
