Limited services for essential workers
After granting permission to begin ferrying essential service employees on Sunday night, the Western and Central Railway have begun operating local train services from Monday. About 350 services will operate with a gap of 15 minutes between them. The first train departs at 5:30 am and the last service will leave at 11:15 pm. The rakes will have limited halts. “We plan to operate these services with a gap of 15 minutes. We do not want coaches to be overcrowded,” a WR official said.
The decision came after authorities from the Maharashtra government, Indian Railways and local agencies came together to finalise the details of the operation on June 14. A single train will only carry a maximum of 600-700 commuters to follow social distancing norms. Commuters will have to display their ID cards and their special QR coded colour-based tickets. As the number of COVID-19 patients continue to surge, railway unions are concerned about contracting the virus as there are over three lakh essential workers in the city.
