PUNE: A 52-year-old man from Thane, who was staying at his in-laws’ house in Erandwane, succumbed to complications associated with the Covid-19 infection at a private hospital here on Monday. This is Pune’s first Covid-19 death.
Two octogenarians from Mumbai also died of the infection on Monday, pushing the state’s death toll up to 10. Maharashtra added 17 new positive cases to touch 220, the second highest in the country. Mumbai had eight cases, Pune five, Nagpur two, and Nashik and Kolhapur one each.
The condition of two more patients in Pune is critical and they are on ventilator support in private hospitals. Three more people tested positive for the infection in Pune on Monday, taking the cases’ tally to 43.
The man who died in Pune had medical conditions including diabetes and hypertension. He had no history of recent international travel or any proximity to known infected persons or their contacts.
“Initially, only his lungs were affected by viral pneumonia. His condition worsened late on Sunday night. He developed multi-organ failure and died around 11am on Monday,” said public health expert Sanjeev Wavare, assistant medical officer of health (AMoH), Pune Municipal Corporation .
