MUMBAI: Amidst Covid-19 scare in the city, the BMC on Sunday announced that its Veer Mata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan And Zoo (popularly known as Byculla Zoo) will remain shut until further orders.

On weekdays, the number of visitors at the popular tourist destination is over 6,000, and on public holidays and weekend, the number crosses 12,000. Many schools are also known to take its students for picnics at the zoo.
Authorities said that the precautionary step is being taken by the civic body to avoid any large gathering of people. The zoo very recently on January 26 saw the Maharashtra chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray inaugurate the 13 meters high Bird Aviary site within its premises. Apart from it other enclosures for animals such as Hyena which were recently brought into the zoo, Fox, jackal, leopards and pond turtle was also inaugurated to be put on display for the visitors.
